Self-Care for New Mums

Self-Care for New Mums Whole Self Yoga

As all new parents will know, the period following the birth of a child can be extremely challenging and exhausting, but also beautiful and emotionally rewarding.

It can of course be difficult to find the time to take care of yourself when you have a new baby, but doing so can not only help to keep your health and happiness at the forefront of your mind, but can also encourage you to be a better mother to your new child!

Nurture Through Self-Care

By nurturing yourself through self-care practices you will not only keep your mood up, but you will also be continuously working on your self-esteem, your self-worth, and reminding yourself that you have to nourish yourself if you are to be able to best nourish others!

You might initially find it hard to make the connection between small moments of self-care and your overall confidence as a parent. However, these are without a doubt two things that go hand in hand!

Making a conscious effort to engage in at least one moment of self-care each day will inevitably promote feelings of self-love. And, when you find ways to love yourself, your capacity to love and care for others also grows exponentially!

So, what are some simple acts of self-care that you can include in your daily routine?

Exercise, clean eating and meditation are fantastic common examples, but you can also try more creative concepts.

For example, try taking ten minutes to yourself to do some basic breathing techniques. Be sure that you focus on this and this alone when engaging in these kinds of techniques. Also, you can try stimulating your senses during this time spent breathing, such as by deliberately smelling a pleasant odour. Peppermint and lavender are two scents that I would especially recommend!

You will find that both of these small acts of self-care will help to clear your mind, soothe your stress and remind you to love yourself.

Self-Esteem and Parenting

As your self-esteem grows you will find that you are much better mentally equipped to tackle the curveballs that life throws at you – especially those that inevitably come as a new parent!

It would be fair to say that learning to silence self-doubt is an ongoing process and it is impossible to completely prevent these thoughts from ever occurring.

However, what we can do is work to find ways to deal with this negativity as quickly as possible and to encourage feelings of self-love and self-worth to flourish instead.

The important thing to remember is that a brief moment of self-doubt in regards to your new challenge as a parent does not mean that you should continue to doubt yourself. It simply means that your conscious mind is prompting you to exercise caution. How you then choose to interpret this is based on a combination of your conditioning and your intentions.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Harnessing the power of positive thinking will be of great use when it comes to battling your inner critic – a force to be reckoned with when it comes to being a new parent. This is absolutely something that you can teach yourself and develop on your own.

It is not necessary to wait for negative feelings to strike before you attempt to combat them with deliberate positive thoughts and actions. Creating your very own list of positive affirmations that are personal to you and your struggles, and making time to say them to yourself every day, will help to keep your confidence in yourself at the forefront of your mind.

Remember, you alone have the power to carve out this new experience that you are embarking upon, and all of us have it in us to be the best that we can be! The key is to forgive yourself for perceived mistakes, be kind to yourself and those around you, and attempt to learn as much from your new child as you are striving to teach them!
