5 Ways Yoga Teacher Training Changed My Life

5 Ways Yoga Teacher Training Changed My Life Julie Montagu

You may be surprised to hear that yoga teacher training courses aren’t just for aspiring yoga teachers! If you are simply someone who loves yoga, wants to learn more about it, and would like to soak up this knowledge whilst surrounded by people with similar aims and intentions, then a yoga teacher training course could absolutely change your life!

You may go into your teacher training course with a certain goal in mind, and find that your thoughts and feelings about this  goal evolve throughout the duration of the course. You may have no intention of ever teaching yoga, but as you learn more and expand your own practice, this might become a career aspiration that you are increasingly drawn towards.

Becoming a yoga teacher is hands down one of the best things I have ever done for myself. There isn’t a single thing about this journey that I would change, and I am always excited to share this passion with others. That’s why I want to talk to you today about the five beautiful ways in which yoga teacher training changed my life!

My Own Practice Improved

When I embarked upon my yoga teacher training course, I began to pay much greater attention to my own practice, and to better understand the concept of yoga on the whole.

As I continued to learn more about the incredible benefits of yoga, my dedication to yoga itself became stronger and stronger.

One thing that I have now learnt to be true about all teachers, is that they must lead by example. This means always striving to be the teacher that you would want to have yourself. Only if you continue to deepen your own knowledge and expand your own practice, can you continue to be able to guide other people through the process of doing so.

If I had never taken that huge leap into doing my yoga teacher training course, then I may not have found this purpose to push my own practice.

I always say that I am a student of yoga first and foremost, and then a teacher. I firmly believe that even if I hadn’t gone on to teach yoga after becoming qualified to do so, that my own practice would have continued to be a priority!

Watching the Journey my Students Take

One of the most amazing things about becoming a yoga teacher for me has been watching my students transform – both on and off the mat.

Being able to witness people become healthier, happier, more confident versions of the people you met when they first came to your classes is an absolute joy. Being able to witness this has undoubtedly changed my life.

This is something that you can literally see right in front of you during each session. Your students may arrive at your class looking tired and stressed out from their busy lives, but by the end of the class they are bursting with energy and visibly uplifted.

The more profound changes that occur over time are also obvious to see, and something that I take great pleasure in observing as a yoga teacher. When people start to pay more attention to their own self-love and self-care, the change in their moods and their approach to each day can be massive!

They may begin to be more self-aware, and to be more genuine, connected, and giving in all of their relationships. They may start to eat a healthier diet, to live healthier lives in other respects, and to share these new intentions with those around them.

Connecting with People on a Deeper Level

I like to think that I’ve always been a friendly, talkative, and sociable person, but my yoga teacher training prompted me to take a step back and really evaluate my relationships.

As the training progressed, I began to truly understand that we, as people, are all connected. It helped me to see and appreciate my flaws, as well as to appreciate other people in a more valuable way. We are all human, and that means that we all make mistakes, that we all seek connections with others, that we all have a past, and that we all deserve compassion and forgiveness.

From the lessons I learnt in my yoga teacher training, I feel as though I have become more acquainted with myself, and my confidence in my potential has grown exponentially!

My yoga teacher training course helped me to connect with myself and those around me on a much more authentic level, and to be more open with my feelings and more generous with my time.

My Attitude to Life Changed

I used to think of life as a linear process with set goals and times by which these ambitions should have been realised. However, since making yoga an integral part of my life, I understand that life is one long learning process.

Yoga teaches us this because it is something that can simply never be mastered entirely. There is always more to learn, more to practice, more to understand and appreciate – and the same is true of life.

Every time I learn something new in yoga, or in fact in my life away from the mat, I feel an incredible gratitude for this new knowledge. I find that I’m often excited for the things that I have not experienced yet, and the things I am yet to learn.

My Understanding of Myself

The first steps into the world of yoga can be daunting for anyone. It can be easy to get hung up on the stereotypical look and attitude of those who practice yoga. This was something that I found hard to avoid when I first got into yoga, and it was difficult not to base my worth as a yogi on fitting in with those around me.

It wasn’t until I embarked upon my teacher training course that I began to truly evolve my ideas of what this spiritual practice is all about, and how my opinion of myself is really the only one that matters!

My worth as a yogi, a yoga teacher, and a person, is something that I have worked hard to build up and hold onto over the time I have been practicing.
