How To Hold Onto Hope In Challenging Times

When life gets difficult, one of the ways in which we can keep ourselves going is by holding onto hope for brighter days. This is something that comes easy to some of us, and not so easy to others.

If you are among those who find it hard to have hope for the future, then you are absolutely not alone, and this is something you can work to change.

What Is Hope?

Hope is the expectation or belief that positive things are going to happen in the future. It can also be the belief that something negative isn’t going to happen.

Having hope can help you to stay balanced when you’re living through a difficult period in your life, and can also help to motivate you to make more positive decisions for yourself in those moments.

The Advantages Of Optimism

When you life your live as an optimistic person, then your outlook and perception will be in line with this. The way in which you respond to certain events or incidents is likely to be rational and resilient. You will understand that sometimes bad things happen, and that this doesn’t mean that the whole world is against you.

On the flip-side, if you have a tendency towards pessimism, then it is likely that your reaction to difficult moments will be larger. You may feel as though one bad experience has lasting effects in other areas of your life, or that it feels impossible to process and move past what has happened.

If you have experienced many challenging times in the past, then you may be more inclined to a pessimistic outlook. You may feel that you attract these troubles, or that you are causing them unconsciously. If this is the case, then holding onto hope, and working to be more optimistic, can go a long way to changing your outlook and changing your life.

When you persist with a more optimistic attitude, then it can become easier to process disappointments, and to understand that sometimes things just don’t work out the way you had planned. You will likely find that happiness comes much easier to you, and also that you spread this joy to those around you.

Holding Onto Hope

Becoming a hopeful person isn’t really as simple as just deciding to be more optimistic. This is a process and an attitude that you have to embrace and commit to.

You will find that as you hold onto hope through one tough situation, that you will be better equipped to deal with the next one. This is because you will begin to realise that you can handle the curveballs life throws at you, and that you become stronger because of this.

So, how can you become more hopeful and positive?

The very first thing that you can do, is to acknowledge that this will sometimes be difficult. When you do this, you tell yourself that you are up for the challenge, and that you are prepared to face negativity head on. Once you have summoned the strength to tackle your problems, then there’s nothing to hold you back.

As you encourage yourself to become more hopeful, try to always understand why you feel a certain way about each situation. For example, if someone has made you feel bad about yourself, then truly get to the core of why this has happened. How has this person exerted power over you, and why have they done this? Is it truly to do with you, or is it more to do with something they are struggling with?

As another example, if you are anxious about something, take the time to understand why this thing is making you anxious, and if these feelings are truly warranted. It’s a cliche for sure, but what is the worst that can happen?

By reframing the negative moments as lessons to protect you in the future, you can train your mind to find hope in any situation. 

A Positive Future

Becoming a more hopeful person in the present moment will go a long way to creating more positivity for the future. This can help you to live a life with more meaning, and to make better decisions to benefit yourself and those around you in the long term.

Being able to look back, and to know that you have worked hard to cultivate a more positive life for yourself, is a great way to bolster your mental health and happiness. It can encourage feelings of self-love and self-worth, and help you to feel good about the path that you are on.

Remember, the actions that you take today can have consequences in the future — both good and bad — and you have the capacity to take control of those actions.
