How To Focus On Yourself

How To Focus On Yourself

One of the very best things that you can do for your emotional wellbeing is to truly take the time to focus on yourself!

If you are constantly rushing from one thing to the next, and worrying about the past and the future, then you can quickly run yourself into the ground. When you do not take the time to recover from moments of negativity, then these seemingly small things can begin to feel like much larger problems.

Today I am going to talk about some of the reasons why we find it difficult to focus on our own happiness. I am also going to explore some great ways to get back on track and live happier lives!

Depending On Others

There are often times when we know we can depend on the kindness of other people to help us be our best selves. We may receive this support in a number of ways, and it may often be very meaningful and consistent. However, it is important to remember that the people who give us this support are also human, and also must preserve time to take care of themselves.

So while it can be fantastic to have people in our lives who wish to build us up in this way, it is also great to know how to be this support for yourself.

Making Yourself Happy

Being able to create happiness and positivity for yourself is the secret to leading a fulfilling life. When you master this skill and truly understand the benefit of it, then nothing will hold you back from being your best self!

Think about this concept for a moment. You will likely have some immediate thoughts — both good and bad — about how well you are currently able to do this.

To explore this further, I would like you to consider the following questions:

  1. Do you like having time by yourself and enjoy being alone in peace?
  2. Do you most often look to other people to create fun and entertainment?
  3. How do you feel about taking time away from work? Does leave this leave you unsure of what to do with yourself?
  4. Do you enjoy being at home? Or do you crave adventure and a change of scenery?

Understanding Your Answers

Let's delve into how these questions are connected to your own happiness!

When you actively avoid being alone then this could be a sign that there are things within yourself that you don't want to think about. Perhaps you have unhappy thoughts that begin to surface in moments of quiet and being surrounded by people helps you to steer clear of this negativity.

If you find that you struggle to create your own fun and look to others to keep you entertained, then this can also be a sign that you aren't entirely comfortable in your own company.

Work can be an amazing distraction from negativity in other parts of your life. There are many reasons why you might throw yourself entirely into your work, and these reasons can sometimes be positive. However, if you are using this part of your life to redirect your mind from things you would rather not think about, then this can quickly become unhealthy.

When you do not look forward to time away from work because it leaves your mind with time to wander, then this can be a clear indication of unhappiness.

If you are currently craving a change of scenery and some adventure and excitement, then this can often mean that you are unhappy with how things are. Sometimes in these instances we can look to make small changes instead of the more dramatic changes that our minds may immediately dream up.

Focus On Yourself

If you have determined that you are unhappy with one or more things in your life, then it is always within your power to make a change.

Finding the courage to say no and to end situations that are causing this unhappiness can of course be very difficult. However, there is so much happiness and clarity to be gained on the other side of these decision.

Try to understand the value in your own needs and process any guilt that you may have about putting yourself first. Envision what you want your life to be and start to take small steps towards making this a reality.

Nurture Your Own Self-Esteem

It is so important to remember and remind yourself that YOU matter. Your self-esteem may be low for any number of reasons, and it may seem like an uphill challenge to get back to feeling good.

You may have given so much of yourself to others over the years that you have forgotten how to give to yourself. This constant giving and taking care of others needs can contribute to low self-esteem, as you most often feel as though your purpose is connected to the needs of others.

Take some time to reconnect to yourself and all of the things you love about your mind, and body, and life so far. Encourage those good feelings to the surface and allow them to remain.
